Mr. Stephen Willoughby
Mr. Stephen Willoughby is qualified in Electronic and Computer Engineering before moving on to complete a PGCE in Mathematics and more recently a Master's in Education. His teaching career began in Leeds in the UK and he has gained 12 years of extensive international teaching experience working in countries such as South Korea, Libya, Jordan and more recently in Romania. Mr. Stephen loves teaching because he can make a difference. By sharing his knowledge and experiences he hopes to help children to be caring, internationally minded, adventurous leaders of tomorrow.
Mr. John Murphy
Mr. John Murphy hails from Cork, Ireland where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Management from University of Limerick. After working in Spain for a number of years, he moved to London and completed a PGCE from the University of East London. Four years later he took that experience and worked in Bangkok, Bucharest and Baku in both KS1 and KS2, in different leadership and management positions accumulating over 12 years of knowledge in international education.
Now Mr. Murphy is completing a Masters in Educational Leadership and Management from the University of London and believes strongly that communication and collaboration are essential aspects of productive learning environments.
Mr. Murphy has visited Malaysia a number of times with his wife and is now looking forward to the opportunity to contribute to the future of such a progressive country, while discovering and learning more with his two young children.
Mr. Kam Yin Boey
Head of PE & CCA
Mr. Kam Yin Boey is from Wales, UK. He studied at the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff (UWIC), where he completed a BSc degree in Sport and Exercise Science. He then completed a PGCE in Primary Education, specialising in Physical Education, at Swansea Metropolitan University. Mr. Kam was one of the original members of staff at Straits International School, Penang when it first opened in 2012. He undertook various roles as the Year 5 Class Teacher, PE and Sport Co-ordinator, Head of CCAs and Head of Houses. After four years, he then moved to Rome, Italy as a junior school specialist in Physical Education. Mr. Kam enjoys playing a range of sports in his spare time that include field hockey, football, golf, squash and badminton.
Mr. Edward Hinmers
Primary School Teacher
Mr. Edward Hinmers graduated from Manchester University with a BA(Hons) in Philosophy and Social Sciences in 2000. Soon after, he started working in the independent school sector and was inspired by a colleague to teach EAL. He received his CELTA in 2002 and moved to the south of Spain in order to teach English and learn Spanish. In 2014 he completed his School Centred Initial Teacher Training PGCE in England. Mr. Edward is also a qualified Personal Trainer and loves to use the variety of skills he has learnt, to ensure that his students are engaged and working to the best of their abilities. Outside of the classroom, he loves keeping fit and playing sports so that he can enjoy cooking and eating delicious food. He is very excited to have the opportunity to try the fantastic variety of cuisine in Malaysia!
Mr. Philip Józefek
Primary Teacher & KS 2 Coordinator
Mr. Philip Józefek (or to the students – Mr. J) originates from Bradford, England but was raised in Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Isle of Man and Brunei Darussalam. He completed his BSc Hons degree at the University of Bradford in Medical Technology in Sport and then went on to do his PGCE in Primary Education at the University of Sunderland. While teaching on the international circuit, he has taught in Qatar, Mongolia, Croatia, Azerbaijan and Russia. Mr. J believes that offering a variety of different teaching methods and motivating children to reflect on their work will encourage them to take risks, make mistakes and learn from them. This will then result in them being confident, independent children. In his spare time, Mr. J enjoys fitness regimes, playing sports, exploring countries and watching/reading things which make him think about work... life or just laugh!
Year 2 & KS 1 Coordinator
Ms. Nicola Monaghan is the Year 2 and Key Stage 1 Coordinator at our school. She is delighted to be joining a school that prides itself on creating an engaging learning environment that encourages all students to reach their full potential. Born in Toronto, Canada and raised on the west coast of Ireland, Ms. Monaghan has enjoyed studying and working on both sides of the Atlantic. After successfully completing a Bachelors of Education in Ireland, she relocated to Toronto where she went on to study and receive her Masters of Education in Curriculum Studies and Teacher Development from the University of Toronto. Upon completion of her Masters, Ms. Monaghan taught children for a time across the Toronto area in both Kindergarten and Years 2-4. Until recently she lived in Milan, Italy where she worked both as a class teacher for Year 4 and as the Head of the school’s Drama Department. Ms. Monaghan is excited to join our team at Straits International School where she brings her high levels of energy and passion for teaching. Teaching at our growing new school provides Ms. Monaghan with many opportunities to develop projects and activities that are driven by her students interests and abilities. In her spare time Ms. Monaghan loves to be active outdoors and looks forward to exploring all the beauty and culture Malaysia has to offer.
