Working Together to Raise Standards
We place great importance on the relationship between home and school and we encourage our parents to be heavily involved within the Straits Community. Our doors are always open, staff are approachable and pupils are genuinely proud to show off their work, whether in the classroom or on displays.
Our form tutors are always available at pick-up times if a short conversation is all that is required to answer a simple question. The school publishes one progress reports and two full reports each academic year. The full reports are also organised with two associated parents’ evenings with an extra evening at the mid-point of the academic year.
The School produces fortnightly newsletter which is sent electronically to all parents. Information on trips and co-curricular activities is circulated by the School secretary well in advance of proposed events. Should you require any additional information about trips, events, then please contact the School secretary in the office.
Parents are also invited to join special events such as student-led performances, sports days and social activities, etc. The school also organises a Parents Association, The Straits Parents Support Group, which organises a variety of social functions during the year and plays an important role in the life of the school.

The school vision for the SPSG is to enrich the community spirit here, in line with our ethos and mission statement, which is;
“To prepare our students to take up their places in an ever evolving and challenging world, striving for continuous excellence in their pursuits, but tempered with empathy for others. Students of Straits will leave the school with strong moral and ethical values and with a truly internationally minded outlook.”
Specifically, the SPSG is a positive addition to the school by promoting parental involvement in such activities as service enrichment, fund raising for charity, increasing awareness of the values of the school, helping parent-school communication and delivering co-curricular activities, for example. It is also the school’s wish that they truly help the community develop the school motto in our students – Non Mihi, Non Tibi, Sed Nobis.
The SPSG also provides a valuable link to the Principal and the school leadership team in terms of consultation. It is also expected that the SPSG shall, on occasion, be invited to meet SLT to gain parental perspective on other school developments. The Principal will regularly meet with the Parent Support Group to encourage proactive participation in promoting the school ethos and other school events.

How to Get Involved?

Appointments & Contacts
The school operates an open door policy, so you can always enquire at the reception if the Principal is available to meet. However, please be advised that if you wish to ensure an appointment it is always wise to phone the school or email in firstname.lastname@example.org for further details. Teachers, by the nature of their timetabled work, should always be emailed personally before dropping in, just in case they are teaching. Your child’s Form Teacher should always be your first port of call, unless it is a serious issue, in which case, contact the Principal directly. If you have a complaint, please follow the procedure as out- lined within the handbook.
Many teachers, including the Principal, will endeavour to be present at the beginning and end of school, mingling with parents and supervising children. You are always welcome to go talk with them when they are not too busy with children! The staff are here to help and are friendly, courteous members of our community. Please do not hesitate to establish friendly relations with our professional team, the home- school relationship is a vital part of our ethos.
Please remember that if you do e mail staff personally outside school office hours, although we shall do our best to answer them as soon as possible, it may take one or two working days to receive a reply. It is also advisable not to contact staff members through their mobile numbers, but to contact them through the school.
